Two handhelds sold as “R36S” can need different firmware or screen settings. Before buying, ask which hardware, system and included accessories you will actually receive—not just whether a listing says “original.”
We sell R36S handhelds. This guide combines our own sample photographs and current-batch product information with the community documentation linked below. It is not an independent authentication certificate or a game-performance test.
Two photographed samples—not a universal test

The board shown in our current-batch photo is from the R36S batch we currently sell, and both board photographs were taken by our team. The right-hand image is a comparison sample. These photos illustrate these two examples; they do not establish authenticity, performance or compatibility across every R36S variant or future shipment.
Board layouts and component packages can help document a configuration. However, a photo or a count of packages alone does not establish the chips’ identity, total memory, bandwidth or speed. Nor does it prove that another device has unstable storage. Match any conclusion to the exact device and supporting evidence.
What does “original” actually tell you?
Firmware communities use R36S and clone labels to distinguish hardware configurations. These compatibility labels are not, by themselves, proof of brand authorization or supply-chain provenance.
For example, the dArkOSRE-R36 compatibility matrix lists “R36S-V12 2023-08-18 Panel 0” under “r36s” and “R36S-V12 2023-08-18 Variant 2 Panel 1” under “clone.” The shared base marking is not enough to identify an exact configuration. These are the project’s classifications of those entries, not an identification of our photographed samples.
The R36S-DTB project also documents newer screens that may not work with the usual display configuration files. A black screen after a software change is therefore not an authenticity test; it may indicate a configuration mismatch. This is not a diagnosis of an individual device.
Treat a shell, logo, firmware name, price or memory-chip count as a clue to investigate—not proof on its own. A photo of one sample also cannot identify every color, capacity or later batch a seller may ship.
Does our current R36S batch have Wi-Fi?
For the batch we currently sell, Wi-Fi requires a compatible external Wi-Fi adapter. An adapter is not included with the handheld and must be obtained separately. Do not assume that any adapter will work; check the exact adapter, installed system and driver requirements before buying accessories.
We do not use “clone” or a system name as a blanket rule for external Wi-Fi compatibility. This guide does not establish network support for every alternative board. A working Wi-Fi connection also does not establish that a particular game supports two-player netplay; multiplayer compatibility requires a separate check.
Five things to check before ordering
- Current configuration: the model, selected storage option and included accessories. Ask whether the information describes current stock or an older sample.
- Relevant photos: the front, back, packaging labels and system-information screen, with the sample or batch identified. Hide private information.
- Specific hardware details: where already available, a complete board marking, revision and readable component markings. Do not disassemble a device just to follow this checklist; request existing records or qualified support.
- Software support: the installed system version, board/panel configuration and relevant project instructions. “It runs ArkOS” alone does not identify the hardware.
- Support and returns: what happens if the delivered configuration differs from the listing. Read the actual seller’s terms rather than assuming a community compatibility list is a warranty.
Before changing a card or trying a game port
Keep the supplied card unchanged while establishing the configuration. Record the system version and ask which original boot or DTB files should be preserved. A DTB describes hardware; a familiar filename is not an authenticity certificate.
Do not flash an image merely because another R36S owner used it successfully. Check current, configuration-specific instructions. As checked on October 17, 2026, the ArkOS-R3XS README states that this project is no longer maintained and points to successors. That statement concerns this repository, not every ArkOS-related project, and is not a replacement-firmware recommendation for your unit.
Game compatibility is a separate question. It can depend on the system, runtime, port, game version, controls and legally obtained files. A larger card does not establish performance or grant a game license.
For Minecraft or Stardew Valley, start with our pre-installation compatibility checklist. It explains what to verify, not a guarantee that either game runs on a particular device.
A better buying question
Ask: “What exactly will I receive, what evidence identifies this configuration, and which accessories and software does it require?” If an answer is unavailable, leave it unresolved instead of treating a label as proof.
